Former Murray & Roberts Employees

Description

What: Murray & Roberts is a well known company which was contracted under Aquarius mine. The employees went into strike in 2009 for wage increase and were fired from work.most of whom were migrant workers and were residing in the mine hostels. They are still residing in the hostels even though they are no longer mine employees.
Where: there hostels are based in Phuana, another part of Ikemeleng in Kroondal outside Rustenburg in the North West province. The community of Phuana is about 300 metres away from one of the shafts of Glencore Xstrata in Kroondal.
Impacts: the former employees were not compensated by Murray & Roberts and most of them are sick. They are provided with accommodation by Aquarius which is a gut thing, but they are dying of hunger.
Likely causes: Aquarius is claiming that the employees were of Murray & Roberts and it can not be held accountable for the damage done by its former contractor. Media has covered the story but did not reveal all the information.
