Where: the dam is owned and managed by Aquarius platinum mine which operates in Kroondal next to the community of Ikemeleng outside Rustenburg, the platinum city.
Impacts: each and every windy season,Ikemeleng community is covered with dust in a way that it becomes impossible for you to see a person 100 metres away. we do not know what the dust contains as the dam is believed to be carrying very hazardous materials. The dust can seen inside local shacks and on the wind screens of the cars around.
Likely causes: many people in Ikemeleng are suffering from respiratory diseases. According to the study that was made by Bua Mining Communities, which was to measure the conditions of health in Bojanala,the study shows that most people who lives around mine operations, suffer from respiratory problems. Ikemeleng is one of those communities.
