MNS is an informal settlement in Emalahleni,the City of coal.People in this area lived since the 1960's and were moved from one place to the other due to mining in this area.The community
of MNS are struggling to get clean water,
proper housing, electricity and proper tarred roads.

There is a coal mine just a few metres from
the community and trucks are passing by
The road on which they pass is a gravel road and dust is everywhere. This is a black coal dust.

The mine is using a lot of water whilst our
The water we use is dirty and rusty and often we spend many days without water.

To drink, cook and wash we are forced to
collect the contaminated water from the
mine which the mine dumps after clean
from the mine causes diarrhoea, skin rash,
There are no danger signs or no-trespassing signs at the mining premises, people just go to the open pit to collect coal slate for burning purpose.
Even children go to the open pit
safety of the people is not even taken
into consideration by the mining company
because the premises are not fenced as
The municipality is shifting the blame
to the mines and the mines blame the
municipality and as to who is to be blamed
